Give opportunity for a few members of the group to share challenges of change they have experienced and tell how they responded.
Read the text and discuss the perception of others that Jabez had to overcome.
Before slaying Goliath think about the way in which others perceive David? I Samuel 17:28, 33, 42-44
How did David respond? I Samuel 17:34-37; 45-47
God wanted to make sure Gideon understood that his situation did not depend on others. How did He teach this lesson to Gideon? Judges 7:2-8
Jabez did not accept that his future was predetermined by others (mother or anyone else) but trusted God to define his future. What does the text say he asked for and what does it say God did?
Jeremiah 29:10-14 was a reminder to the Israelites that though they were captive in Babylon their future was not in the hands of their captors but in the hands of God. What does this remind us about Gods desire and ability to change our situation?
Change is not always easy, discuss ways we can grow through it rather than grieve over it?
